In this article we will review how to install and use FileZilla.

For the installation, you just need to search in Haiku Depot for “FileZilla” in the “All packages” tab :

Then click on “Install” button to proceed.

The last version available on Haiku is 3.66.4 (December 2023) which is not the latest one available on the official website :

The first thing you might need when starting with FileZilla is to define your favorite’s site settings.

For that go into the “File > Site Manager” menu :

On the “My Sites” entry, click on “New site” :

Enter the name of the site’s shortcut – like HaikuInsider below :

Then indicate the protocol to use, between FTP and SFTP :

After that, you will need to indicate the host address, the port (generally 21), the user and the password:

Proceed by clicking “Ok” :

The site should now be available in the connect menu :

The first time you connect, you can decide to remember the password used :

And here we are :

Your connection is now effective, and you can transfer files from/to your local folder on the left to/from your distant folder on the server on the right.

Verify easy to use :)

Additional features

In case you need to transfer your sites’ settings from one machine to another, where FileZilla is installed, it’s possible.

Click on “File > Export” :

And tick the “Export Site Manager entries” choice :

Confirm with “OK”.

Indicate the name of the file for the exported sites :

Once you’re on the other machine where FileZilla is installed, you just need to use the “File > Import” menu :

And then select your “*.xml” file containing all your sites’ settings to get them recognized by FileZilla:)

Be cautious to not share that kind of file, as it contains the details of your credentials especially the passwords.

Another nice feature is the possibility to create bookmarks.

Imagine you’re using regularly a dedicated folder for your files transfer.

To memorize it, select the “Bookmarks> Manage bookmarks” menu :

Then indicate the name of your bookmark and the path on your local directory :

Validate with “OK”.

Next time, when you will use the corresponding bookmark :

The correct local folder will be used automatically !

In case you don’t want to memorize password into FileZilla, you can change your choice in the Settings>Interface>Passwords preferences :

If you want to change the default icons, you can decide to change the theme to use via Settings>Interface>Themes :

Last feature which can be interesting : defining your preferred language is possible via Settings>Language preferences :

Even if FileZilla is not a native application under Haiku, it’s a very good option to handle file transfers between your machine and a remote server !
