The port of VLC is - for our greatest pleasure - available on Haiku:)

To install VLC media player, just open Haiku Depot and search for "vlc".

Proceed with the installation. The first time you open VLC, the below main window is visible :

The current version available is 3.0.21 :

Let's review a few of its features. In the view menu, you can select "Playlist" :

The default playlist available proposes to listen to free internet music from Jamendo :

You can discover some artists like below :

Jamendo website is proposing free music download or free music streaming as indicated on their official website :

A nice feature which is working great under Haiku : Handle your media library and you can listen to your music over your network.

In the screenshot above the music is read from a NAS :)

Let's check now the other playlist : Icecast Radio.

You can listen to internet radios from the list below.

Like Radio 24/7 :

Yes VideoLAN can read internet radio, however for that, I prefer the StreamAudio native application.

Music and Internet Radio can be fun, however the main usage of VideoLAN is reading videos :)

Let's open the "Big Buck Bunny" video from Blender organization.

At the beginning of the reading, the filename of this video is displayed inside the video :

And after that, the name disappears, so that the video can be viewed correctly :

VideoLAN proposes various way to display your videos, which can be fullscreen, or with different aspect ratios :

An icon is also visible in the Deskbar for some quick actions like play/stop :

You can also open a network stream :

Which can be an audio stream like below (internet radio) :

In case you're reading an audio stream, you can use Visualization effects :

If you stop a video, you can select "Set as Wallpaper" :

In that case, the video will be displayed on all the screen, and you can do a screenshot (with Flameshot for instance).

if the quality of the video is good enough, it will give you a nice screenshot :)

In case you need some information on the way the video is read, you can check the codec information used for the media :

You can also customize VideoLAN interface with custom skins :

Or define hot keys :

The VideoLAN application is quite useful on Haiku to read all kind of media, whatever they are - music, radio, video - and wherever they are - local or from a stream.

Please note, it's also proposing the conversion of media to various formats, but also the streaming of media to your local network.

I didn't check these last features, but you can give them a try :)
